Overview
This role leads UKAEA’s HTS magnet technology development programme to realise the HTS magnet system for STEP, the UK’s prototype fusion power plant. STEP is expected to carry among the largest HTS magnet systems in the world, and successful designs depend on demonstrating innovative HTS magnet components through bench-scale tests and sub-scale prototypes. The role is accountable for delivering the STEP HTS small test coil, short cable, and magnet materials programmes at pace, against the demanding timescales of the STEP “model coil” programme.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the HTS magnet technology development programme, producing clear technology development plans and leading a multi-disciplinary team to deliver against them
Deliver the STEP HTS small test coil, short cable, and magnet materials programmes
Identify magnet technology needs and execute discrete test campaigns, applying a “fail fast” mentality
Act as the key interface between the STEP power plant design team, where technology challenges emerge, and the model coil development programme, which demonstrates these technologies at scale
Communicate complex technical challenges and findings clearly to a range of technical and non-technical audiences
Work collaboratively across STEP’s international partnerships and identify opportunities to expand UKAEA’s HTS magnets capability
Requirements
Essential: Relevant engineering degree or equivalent; chartered status with a suitable professional institution; demonstrable track record developing technology and delivering innovative solutions to industry; good understanding of HTS magnet design and HTS multi-physics, especially quench; experiment design proficiency with electrical and cryogenic laboratory equipment; commercial awareness, project and budget management experience; experience leading diverse, multidisciplinary teams; ability to communicate in technical and non-technical terms.
Desirable: Demonstrable track record developing HTS magnet technology specifically; hands-on experience with HTS materials and fabricating HTS magnets.
