Senior Theoretical & Computational Scientist

Company: Realta Fusion Inc.

Location: Madison, WI, USA (onsite)

Employment type: Full Time

Overview

Realta Fusion is hiring a computational plasma physicist to define the physics foundation for its high-field axisymmetric magnetic mirror programme. The Senior Theoretical & Computational Scientist will lead theoretical and computational projects validating models against experimental data from the operating WHAM device at UW-Madison, while guiding the design of Realta’s next device, Hammir. The role spans proposing new experimental campaigns and diagnostics, collaborating with external national laboratories and universities, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop complex research methodologies to identify solutions in magnetic mirror fusion research and optimise the design of Realta’s next fusion devices
  • Lead and participate in theoretical and computational projects advancing the physics basis for the axisymmetric mirror, focused on validation and extrapolative design
  • Interface with experimental physics, engineering and business leadership teams to deliver technical milestones
  • Conduct literature reviews, prepare reports and materials, and disseminate information to appropriate entities
  • Identify, write, or assist in developing grant opportunities and proposals to secure start-up funding
  • Serve as an institutional subject matter expert and liaison with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to company safety standards and implement them within the R&D team

Requirements

Essential: PhD in Plasma Physics or a related field plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience in theoretical and computational plasma physics research; extensive experience with MHD equilibrium and linear stability calculations and Extended-MHD/multi-fluid simulations using codes such as NIMROD or JOREK; familiarity with Fokker-Planck, particle-in-cell (PIC) and RF heating simulation tools such as WarpX, VPIC, Genray, AORSA, or CQL3D; basic knowledge of standard plasma diagnostics and analysis techniques; understanding of magnetically confined fusion plasma heating and current drive technologies; exceptional written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated innovation capacity through IP and/or publications.
