Overview
Proxima Fusion is Europe’s fastest-growing fusion company and the first spin-out from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, developing the world’s first commercial stellarator fusion power plant. This Neutronics Engineer will play a critical role in the neutronics group, carrying out analysis required for licensing and operational safety of the Alpha stellarator, running reproducible simulations and automating neutronics workflows across shutdown dose rate mapping, magnet heating, tritium breeding, and activation.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform neutronics analysis using OpenMC and DAGMC for a range of neutron and photon responses important for stellarator optimisation and design
- Contribute to the integration of neutronics analysis into automated pipelines, programming in Python (essential), using version control (Git/Graphite) within a Docker environment; C++ programming considered a benefit
- Perform verification and validation by comparing OpenMC simulation results to other codes and experimental data
- Construct simulation-ready CAD using CadQuery and CSG geometries of the stellarator and surrounding facility
- Contribute to open-source codes for nuclear data processing, CAD conversion/meshing, and particle transport simulations, alongside developing in-house neutronics workflows
Requirements
Essential: PhD or Master’s degree in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, or equivalent experience; experience processing nuclear data; experience with OpenMC, DAGMC, CadQuery, and Gmsh for neutronics analysis; experience designing neutron and gamma shielding; experienced Python programmer using software development tools such as Git.
Desirable: Experience with computation in cloud or HPC environments involving numerical simulations.
