Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable, affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, the company is led by globally recognised fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines, together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercialising energy technologies. It applies proven advanced manufacturing methods, modern computational physics and high-field superconducting magnets to develop its optimised stellarator fusion energy system, through its FusionDirect development programme. This Plasma Diagnostics Scientist leads a subset of diagnostic systems to support scientific investigations on the company’s advanced fusion stellarator, including their development, deployment and operation, and also gives technical advice to and contributes to other teams of engineers and scientists on similar projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the conceptualisation, design, construction and deployment of a subset of plasma diagnostics, such as probes, magnetics, microwaves, infrared, spectroscopy, lasers, optical, x-ray and/or neutronics systems, to ensure they meet technical feasibility
- Develop and apply data analysis and models to set requirements for plasma diagnostics and other in-vessel stellarator systems
- Participate in the planning, execution and analysis of experiments
- Mentor and guide junior scientists and engineers, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment
Requirements
Essential:
- PhD in physics, engineering or a related field with a strong focus on plasma physics, fusion energy and/or diagnostics
- Extensive experience designing, developing and operating advanced diagnostic systems for fusion or plasma physics experiments
- Strong knowledge of diagnostic techniques and instrumentation commonly used in plasma physics, such as spectroscopy
- Proficiency in data acquisition, analysis and interpretation using scientific software and programming languages (for example Python, MATLAB)
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to diagnostic systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, present findings to diverse audiences, and contribute to scientific publications and proposals
- Familiarity with safety protocols and procedures related to fusion experiments and diagnostics
Desirable:
- Knowledge of fusion stellarator concepts, including device physics and operational requirements (listed as highly desirable)
