Mechanical Design Engineer

Company: Stellarax Energy

Location: Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada

Employment type: Full Time

The Stellarex Energy Mechanical Design Engineer serves as a key owner and custodian of the 3D spatial model for the company’s prototype stellarator facility in the Greater Toronto Area. Stellarex Energy is building foundational technology for the clean energy transition by harnessing stellarator fusion to provide safe, reliable and carbon-free baseload power.

Reporting to the technical leadership of the project, the Stellarex Energy Mechanical Design Engineer contributes to complex physical plant integration, automated 3D clash detection, space envelope allocation and configuration control across all reactor and plant divisions. The role oversees the production of manufacturing-ready drawing packages and manages the reconciliation between as-designed CAD models and as-built metrology data during physical hardware fabrication and facility assembly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as custodian of the master 3D spatial assembly model for the stellarator device, cryostat, vacuum vessel, internal components and balance-of-plant infrastructure
  • Execute continuous automated 3D spatial clash detection, space envelope management and physical layout integration across multidisciplinary systems, including magnets, heating, diagnostics, cooling loops and structural frames
  • Apply engineering change control protocols (ECRs and ECOs), managing baseline CAD revisions, design trade-offs and technical risk registers through formal phase-gate reviews
  • Work with mechanical design engineers, CAD specialists and drafting technicians, enforcing standardised CAD modelling guidelines, layer conventions and PLM database structures
  • Generate, verify and approve detailed 2D and 3D manufacturing drawing packages, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing specifications, drawing standards and Bills of Materials (BOM) for internal fabrication and external precision suppliers
  • Ensure physical reconciliation between as-designed CAD baselines and as-built laser scanning and 3D metrology data during component fabrication, factory acceptance testing and facility site assembly, to resolve dimensional variances

Requirements

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, aerospace engineering or a related technical engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of progressive engineering experience managing complex 3D CAD models, plant spatial layouts and mechanical integration for major industrial, nuclear or aerospace facilities
  • Expert proficiency in enterprise 3D CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM/PDM) software suites (for example Siemens NX, Teamcenter, CATIA, SolidWorks or Windchill)
  • Deep technical command of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, precision machining tolerances, welded pressure vessel standards and manufacturing drawing approval workflows
  • Proven track record in configuration management (ECO and ECR), spatial envelope control, and integrating 3D laser scan and CMM metrology data for as-built CAD reconciliation
