Magnets Engineering Manager

Overview
UK Fusion Energy is seeking a Magnets Engineering Manager to serve as the technical authority for the STEP programme’s magnet system — one of the most demanding engineering challenges in fusion. STEP plans to deploy jointed REBCO high-temperature superconducting magnets to confine the plasma while allowing maintenance access, requiring some of the largest HTS magnets ever built. Reporting to the Head of Tokamak Machine, the role leads an integrated team of UKFE and UKAEA staff alongside specialist external organisations, with responsibility for maturing the magnet design and burning down technical risk through model coil demonstration during the current tranche 2a period (2025–2029). The successful candidate will also develop the UK and global magnet supply chain in support of STEP and the broader fusion industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as Technical Authority for STEP magnets, accountable for overall adequacy of magnet design, performance, integrity, and technical delivery as delegated by the STEP Design Authority
- Drive forward magnet design work including remountable joints, prioritising convergence with the overall plant design and managing interfaces with wider STEP power plant systems
- Prioritise and manage technical risks, leading technology demonstration activities to increase confidence in magnet requirements
- Champion cross-functional working with plasma, power and cooling, commercial, prototype and test, and project management teams
- Work with Project Managers to manage budget and milestones
- Develop strategy for magnet team recruitment, retention, training, and development
- Build corporate competence in magnet design, manufacture, and operations in collaboration with the UKFE Prototype and Test team
- Engage global technical and manufacturing experts to develop magnet technology solutions and build manufacturing capacity
- Ensure effective technical and quality management of contracts and collaborations with a focus on UK economic and social value
- Manage intellectual property generated by the programme in accordance with UKIFS policy
Requirements
Essential: Demonstrated significant leadership experience in the development and/or delivery of superconducting magnets; degree or equivalent professional recognition in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline; Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional body, or commensurate experience; expert and broad knowledge of magnet technology; substantial experience in the engineering of complex systems; proven ability to inspire and motivate; demonstrated experience setting strategic direction in a rapidly evolving context and coordinating interdisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists; effective communicator with a practical approach to problem solving.
Desirable: Expertise in high-temperature superconductors, quench detection and protection, superconducting cable design and development, manufacturing, commissioning and operation, or tokamak engineering; experience working with emerging technologies; experience on major engineering programmes such as big science.
