Principal Power Electronics Engineer

Location: Everett, WA, USA (Onsite)

Overview

Helion Energy is hiring a Principal Power Electronics Engineer to take ownership of the high-power electrical systems that drive its fusion generators, currently centred on the Polaris prototype. The role covers the full chain of energy management — from pulsed magnet delivery systems capable of sub-millisecond pulses at up to 5 MA and 40 kV, through energy recovery and internal redistribution networks, to grid-tie infrastructure. Reporting to the Manager of Electrical Engineering at Helion’s Everett, WA facility, this is a hands-on design and delivery role that combines deep technical ownership with mentoring responsibility and cross-functional collaboration across one of the most ambitious fusion programmes in the private sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, test, troubleshoot, and support high-voltage power systems for pulsed magnetic coils
  • Oversee design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of systems delivering sub-millisecond pulses up to 5 MA and 40 kV
  • Develop system architectures and collaborate with designers on schematics and installation drawings
  • Lead design reviews to validate cost-effective, scalable, and reliable solutions
  • Support commissioning and lifetime operation of generator power systems and identify optimisation paths for future builds
  • Own cost, schedule, and resource planning for assigned projects
  • Mentor electrical engineers and build technical capability across Helion through cross-functional collaboration

Requirements

Essential: 12+ years of experience in power electronics from design to delivery; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field; hands-on experience designing, fabricating, installing, and testing electronic systems; strong knowledge of solid-state switching technologies including IGBTs, MOSFETs, and SCRs; advanced troubleshooting skills with standard benchtop tools (oscilloscopes, E-loads, pulse generators, spectrum analysers) and PCB design software; proficiency with LTSpice, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, Altium, MATLAB, and Microsoft Office; technical depth in engineering principles, codes, and practices with experience coordinating deliverables to milestones.
