Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets

Location: Devens, MA, USA (onsite)

Overview

Design and analyse mechanical structures for the Central Solenoid (CS) magnet on SPARC – the world’s first fusion device targeting Q>1. Work across the full product lifecycle, from blank-page design through CAD, FEA analysis, vendor support, testing, and production floor delivery. Operate at the intersection of extreme engineering disciplines including cryogenics, composites, vacuum systems, and superconducting magnet design, contributing directly to one of the three primary magnet systems that shape and drive fusion plasma.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and analyse mechanical structures for the CS magnet using hand calculations and FEA
  • Present completed designs for peer and executive review
  • Integrate with CFS methodologies and best practices for analysis and documentation
  • Produce CAD models and engineering drawings of components
  • Develop test plans and support test execution
  • Support production including time on the production floor
  • Design test or tooling hardware to support the CS Magnet programme

Requirements

Essential: 3+ years of experience in aerospace, marine, civil structures, or heavy engineering; structural analysis using FEA and hand calculations; CAD proficiency (NX preferred); mechanical FEA (Ansys preferred); mechanical first principles; conversational understanding of thermal and electrical resistance networks and fluid dynamics.

Desirable: Prior work on superconducting magnet design; vacuum vessel design experience; epoxy resin systems and composite layup experience; analysis of thermal conduction and transients; familiarity with Maxwell’s equations; Python and MATLAB skills; strong technical presentation ability.
