Staff Fuel Cycle & Blanket Test Engineer

Overview
CFS is seeking a Staff Fuel Cycle & Blanket Test Engineer to serve as a technical leader in the development and operation of laboratory systems supporting SPARC’s fusion fuel cycle and molten salt blanket programme. The role centres on commissioning and operating gas handling and molten salt test facilities, with direct ownership of test campaigns that will underpin tritium and blanket technology maturation. Working closely with the Tritium and Blanket Programme leads and the Director of Fuel Cycle & Blanket Technology, the successful candidate will operate with a high degree of independence while contributing to a growing team and building operational culture around safety, rigour, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Own infrastructure support, commissioning activities, and execution of test plans for gas handling and molten salt facilities
- Lead or directly contribute to major system test campaigns in support of SPARC operations
- Operate and maintain gas handling and molten salt facility systems and general laboratory equipment
- Perform and track preventative maintenance on assigned equipment across both test facilities
- Contribute to integrated system commissioning and develop expertise in hazardous material facility operations
- Author, revise, and contribute to operations procedures and formal test documentation
- Support training and development of new operators in tritium handling systems and balance-of-plant equipment
- Generate formal presentations and succinctly summarise test findings for a range of technical and programmatic audiences
- Document facility learnings and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
Requirements
Essential: MS in engineering (chemical, mechanical, aerospace, or materials), physics, chemistry, or a related field with 10 years of relevant experience; demonstrated experience building and executing testing programmes in an R&D setting; experience in collaborative laboratory environments with technicians and senior scientists; rigorous data management and formal lab report writing; attention to detail, safety, and organisational discipline; ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; independent problem-solving capability; excellent communication skills; willingness to travel and work nights, weekends, or on-call as required; physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and operate chainfalls and rigging equipment; flexibility across shift patterns during peak operations.
Desirable: 10+ years of laboratory experience; experience with high-purity gases; glovebox operations and PPE use for hazardous material handling; experience with analytical equipment and high-vacuum system builds; familiarity with Confluence and JIRA; ability to interpret P&ID layouts and HMI indications for plant status.
