Daedal Systems is a plasma diagnostic company for the fusion energy industry, building a platform for industrialized plasma diagnostics that can be deployed as suites across fusion devices industry-wide, rather than each company building its own in-house. This Diagnostic Physicist reports to the Vice President of Science and initially supports the design, deployment and operations of Thomson Scattering, X-ray Spectroscopy and Vis-UV spectroscopy diagnostics, with later scope to support or lead development of additional diagnostics. The role is responsible for bringing spectroscopic diagnostics from low-TRL, bench-top systems to industrialized, deployable systems integrated on fusion devices across the industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the design, deployment and operations of Thomson Scattering, X-ray Spectroscopy and Vis-UV spectroscopy diagnostics
  • Support and/or lead subsequent diagnostic development, potentially including electron cyclotron emission, reflectometry, interferometry/polarimetry, B-dot and/or Hall probes
  • Bring spectroscopic diagnostics from low-TRL, bench-top systems to industrialized, deployable systems integrated on fusion devices across the industry
  • Work autonomously across several diagnostics, supporting their full lifecycle from concept design through product development, implementation and ongoing operational support
  • Help shape the overall technical direction of Daedal’s industrialized plasma diagnostic platform as one of the company’s first technical hires

Requirements


Essential: Master’s degree or higher in physics, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; experience taking a plasma diagnostic through its full lifecycle, including design, procurement, build, test, installation, commissioning, calibration, operation and maintenance; experience developing detailed diagnostic specifications that translate physics measurement requirements into achievable instrument performance; ability to operate independently as a technical lead with minimal supervisory structure; based in Toronto or willing to relocate, with relocation support provided; comfortable with travel to support client systems globally, up to 20% of the time, occasionally for two or more weeks in a row.

Desirable: direct experience on large fusion devices; prior experience in a startup or early-stage technical business.
